Outdoor Water Use
Outdoor water use.
Some parts of New Zealand have very dry summers and hence a heavy water use for gardens. Setting the scene for a water friendly garden is an important aspect of a sustainable house design.
Water friendly gardens are designed for their soil type and climate to be able to flourish without the need for more than minimal watering. They will both reduce water consumption and save time in garden maintenance. Ensuring there is a good top soil layer in the newly developed section is essential.
They include avoiding large expanses of lawn in a sunny, parched area. Choose native plants which are suited to the New Zealand environment or other plants that have good water tolerance. If a garden which will need some watering can’t be avoided installing a drip irrigation watering system will help ensure that garden maintenance is done efficiently.
