Building a Better Way

FAQ

I WANT TO BUILD. WHY GET INVOLVED IN SHAC?

We provide a way for you to interact with those who are working on similar projects. Learn from experts and peers about how to design and build more affordably, efficiently, and more simply.

SHAC Teams are supported by the energy of young people and the skills of professionals. We provide a forum for design teams to get expert feedback on their designs online, via video conferences, and via regional workshops.

HOW DO I TRY THIS OUT?

Sign up to the SHAC Web site, and post a blog entry with a short paragraph description of your vision for your more sustainable building and some of your initial ideas. Other members and experts will respond with helpful suggestions. Post a video or photos too if you like. If you want help posting, ask a young person. They can help!

HOW CAN I INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE?

Ask them for help. How do they want to live, work and play? Teams will have opportunities to present and get feedback from young people and students.

HOW CAN I DESIGN OR BUILD TO A HIGHER LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE?

Get advice from a group of students and professionals and the trades as early as possible in the design, ideally before you even know what it looks like. Follow a design and review process like the Integrated Design Protocol, described on the SHAC web site. Learn from SHAC 2009 teams.

HOW DO I PUBLICISE MY IDEAS AND GET HELPFUL FEEDBACK?

Publish your ideas and designs on the SHAC web site. Release your ideas for creative-reuse and improvement by publishing with a Creative Commons license.
