Form or Join a Team

So you are interested in SHaC? Join in!

One of SHaC’s aims is to encourage tertiary students and staff to work closely with local businesses, local councils, local tradespeople, local communities and each other – so there are opportunities for everyone to play a part in ‘building a better way’.

Forming and registering a team – What you need to know.

1. Anyone with skills and interest can join a team, subject to the team’s approval.

2. Your team must have staff and/or postgraduate participation from the tertiary institution in your region. The balance of a good team will include other tertiary staff or students, and representatives from local council and industry. An important part of the challenge is collaboration. We encourage regional collaboration and we will attempt to connect people from the same region who are interested in forming a team. We have contacts around the country in tertiary organisations, local councils, and industry to help you with this.

3. Holding a lecture or workshop on sustainability and the built environment may help to develop interest in the project and find additional team members.

4. Your first challenge is to investigate project feasibility. To do so, form your team, and meet a couple times to pick an approach. Some of the team will then write a proposal, and use that proposal to investigate funding and site options. For more details, see the requirements of Phase One of the timeline.

5. During team formation, we will refund expenses that you incur on behalf of the SHaC project, up to $500 per team. The funds must be spent towards the production of your proposal to design and build a home. Expected expenses would include the layout and printing of the proposal.

6. After registration, we will select the best teams to take part in the challenge. For those that are selected, SHaC will contribute up to $10,000 (the exact amount depends on the final number of teams selected)towards construction costs.
